The Mix Makes It

In Montessori education, seamless transitions and age mixing are consciously promoted. Students from different age groups work together in a learning environment, leading to natural social interaction and mutual learning. Older children support and inspire younger ones, while the younger ones benefit from the experiences and skills of the older ones. Through this age-mixed structure, children develop empathy, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility. Smooth transitions between age levels allow children to unfold their abilities individually and without pressure, following their own developmental pace. Age mixing fosters a positive learning atmosphere in which children encourage and support each other, leading to a holistic and sustainable educational experience.

Maria Montessori observed that children in age-mixed learning groups tend to develop into more social and responsible individuals. In mixed-age groups, they have more and unique opportunities to learn from and with each other. They experience themselves in constantly changing constellations. This prevents fixation on a specific role and enhances flexibility, contributing to a broader development of their personality. Hierarchies based on performance and competitive behavior are also diminished by age mixing, and age-specific peculiarities and problems are reduced.

Everything Has Its Time

Through these seamless transitions, both the Children's House and the school cater to the individual needs of each child. They allow for a developmental and learning process at each child's own pace. Timing adjustments for moving to the next age-mixed group are always an option. Educators observe and analyze prerequisites and achievements. This approach also makes it possible to include students with special needs, such as giftedness, special educational support requirements, or non-native language backgrounds, in the regular school routine.

Especially during these transitional times, the exchange between educators of the involved learning groups, parents, and children is crucial. It helps find the path that aligns best with the child's needs.
